We are delighted to announce that former Ireland number one tennis player, Conor Niland will be visiting the club on Wednesday 16th October at 6.30pm.
He recently wrote a book called 'The Racket' and on the night he will have a Q&A with members followed by a book signing. He will be chatting about his time on the circuit, playing Wimbledon, playing the US Open.
When Conor was 16, he got the chance to hit with Serena Williams at Nick Bollettieri's famed tennis academy. Conor Niland knows what it's like when Roger Federer walks into the dressing room and he has had the exquisitely terrible experience of facing Novak Djokovic in the world's biggest tennis stadium – while suffering from food poisoning. But he never reached the very top. The Racket is the story of pro tennis's 99%: the players who roam the globe in hope of climbing the rankings and squeaking into the Grand Slam tournaments.
It brings us into a world where a few dozen super-rich players – travelling with coaches and physios – share a stage with lonely touring pros whose earnings barely cover their expenses. Painting a vivid picture of the social dynamics on tour, the economics of the game, and the shadows cast by gambling and doping, The Racket is a witty and revealing underdog's memoir and a unique look inside a fascinating hidden world.
Tickets for the event:
As space is limited we will only be able to offer a limited number of tickets for the event.
The initial set of tickets will go on sale on Friday morning 4th Oct at 9am. These tickets will be 'book tickets' so every ticket sold comes with a copy of the book 'The Racket' which Conor will sign on the night. These will cost €20 and include the book.
The second set of tickets will go on sale on Sunday morning 7th Oct at 10am and these will be free tickets but only available to anyone who volunteered at the recent Closed and Open (kitchen, desk, closing up, baking, committees ect). These tickets will not come with a book. However if you would like to buy your own copy of the book you can bring it on the night and Conor will sign it.
After that we will open a third round of tickets if there are any remaining.
